The mine remains in
temporary cessation, consequently there was no new disturbance and no reclamation or
seeding was completed during 2005.
Ongoing site maintenance and monitoring activities continued through 2005.
Maintenance activities included inspection and clean-out of drainage structures (as
needed), repair of the water treatment pond embankments, clean-up and removal of
miscellaneous equipment and debris (from abandoned buildings and field storage areas),
and focused weed and rodent control activities. Rodent control focused on an existing
infestation of ground squirrels in areas to the west, north, and south of the 7N-Angle
Dewatering Borehole. Control methods included localized application of Prozap (zinc-
phosphate oat bait) at the entrances to rodent_burrows and shooting the rodents.
Somewhere on the order of 400 acres were treated for noxious weed infestations in 2005.
Areas treated included:
- Roadsides (main entry road, all roads on the plateau area south and west of the
road leading to the 7N-Angle Well, and portions of the main entry roads in
both the east and west mine facilities areas)
- Refuse Pile area
- No. 9 Mine Shop area
- Areas in and surrounding the west Mine Facilities area (i.e. Water Treatment
Ponds, Office/Wazehouse, Bathhouse, Coal Handling Facilities, Railroad
Spur, Wastewater Treatment areas, and yard areas)
- The open meadow to the north of the reclaimed Mine No. 4 portals
