February 1998 N•G Coa! 1997 Anrsual Rec(amatiars Report ~ Pape 9
• 5.0 SPRING AND SEEP MONITORING
5.1 REQUIREMENT
HGCC has committed to annually monitoring six spoil springs on the reclaimed area between
April 1 and May 15. As part of the seep monitoring plan springs with a flow rate greater than
75 gallons per minute (gpm) will be analyzed fora "full-suite" list of 25 parameters. These
springs will be sampled for field water-quality pazameters including pH, conductivity,
temperature and estimate of flow. If no flow exceeds 75 gpm, an annual full-suite analysis for
the single largest spring will be completed. To date, no single spring or seep flow exceeding 75
gpm has been observed so the full-suite analyses are performed for the largest flow observed.
Mitigation involves the subsequent evaluation of each spring or seep and the subsequent
determination of the need for remedial action.
5.2 RESPONSE
On May 13, 1997, the spring and seep survey was completed at the Hayden Gulch mine site. A
brief discussion of each site follows. Spoil springs RSP-3 and RSP-4 were also sampled in
November.
RSP-1 - The genera] location of the seep was covered with snow in May and no
measurements were recorded. No flow was observed in November.
• RSP-2 - The general location of the seep was covered with snow in May and no
measurements were recorded. Field water-quality pazameters were measured in
November. The conductivity value was within the previously recorded ranges.
The pH value was slightly elevated from the previous maximum value, 8.8
units versus 8.5 units.
RSP-3 - Field water-quality measurements were recorded in both May and November.
In addition, a sample was collected in November for full-suite analysis. Flow
rates appeared similar to previous observations. Conductivity and pH values
remained within previously observed ranges. Results of the laboratory analyses
indicate that there have been no changes in water quality.
RSP-4 - Field water-quality measurements were recorded in both May and November.
In addition, samples were collected for full-suite analysis. Results of the
laboratory analyses indicates that there have been no changes in water quality.
A flow rate of 72 gallons per minute (gpm) was calculated in May by measuring
flow in Hayden Gulch immediately upstream and downstream of the seep
inflow area. A flume study was conducted in November which indicated a
flow rate of 35 gpm. Conductivity and pH were within previously observed
ranges.
RSP-5 - No flow observed.
•
Montgomery Watson Americas, /nc. (dba TerraMatrixJ
(?O.
