One percent of total vegetation cover was provided by introduced
perennial cool season grasses, specifically smooth brome. Native annual and biennial (orbs and
introduced annual and biennial forbs each contributed less than 1 % to total vegetation cover.
The former was codominated by bigfruit willowherb and gumweed while prickly lettuce dominated
the latter. Introduced annual grasses and introduced perennial forbs were also present in the
area in very small amount.
Total vegetation cover for the Alkali Sagebrush reference area was 30.1 % while standing dead,
litter, bare soil accounted for 5.2%, 35.6%, and 29.1 % respectively of total cover. Species
density averaged 24.2 species/100sq.m.
Production
(Table 15)
Total herbaceous production averaged 293 Ibs/acre. Alfalfa was present in scattered and
. immeasurable amounts in this reference area in 2002.
Mountain Brush Reference Area
(Photograph 25, 27, and 28)
Cover
(Table 16)
Native shrubs were the dominant lifeform present in the Mountain Brush reference area, with
almost 70% of total vegetation cover.
