addition, five other species were also present. Native annual and biennial (orbs and introduced
• annual grasses were also present in the area.
Total vegetation cover was 51.5%; Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock each accounted for
3.5%, 30.4%, 14.3%, and 0.3% respectively of total cover. Species density averaged 13.5
species/100sq.m.
Production
(Table 12)
Total production for the Wadge Pasture in 2002 was 808 Ibs/acre. Alfalfa averaged 120Ibs/acre
while all other herbaceous species accounted for 690 Ibs/acre.
Woody Plant Density
(Table 13)
There were 502 native shrub stems/acre in 2002 in Wadge Pasture. On the average, 292 of
these were adult big sagebrush, with five seedlings, and fifteen dead big sagebrush as well.
Mountain snowberry averaged approximately 196 stems/acre. Chokecherry averaged three
stems/acre while Saskatoon serviceberry, rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus),
Douglas rabbitbrush, and tall threetip sagebrush each contributed less than one stemlacre.
• Alkali Sagebrush Reference Area
(Photographs 21-24)
Cover
(Table 14)
Native shrubs were the dominant lifeform in the Alkali Sagebrush reference area, providing 42%
of total vegetation cover. Within this lifeform, alkali sagebrush (Seriphidium arbusculum ssp.
longilobum) was the most abundant species, with 34% of total vegetation cover. The remaining
8% was shared by mountain snowberry, big sagebrush, and tall threetip sagebrush. Native
perennial grasses composed 32% of total vegetation cover. Making up the bulk of this lifeform
was Letterman needlegrass with over one-third of the lifeform total. Western wheatgrass was
also fairly common, comprising somewhat less than one-third of the lifeform total. Aggasiz
bluegrass and junegrass (Koeleria macrantha) each provided over 10% of cover for the lifeform
while mountain brome and bottlebrush squirreltail (Elymus longifolius) each provided about 3%.
Oniongrass (Bromelica bulbosa), Montana wheatgrass (Elymus lanceolatus fm. albicans),
thickspike wheatgrass, and Sandberg bluegrass comprised the balance. Slender wheatgrass
was also present. Twenty-five native perennial (orbs combined to provide 24% of total vegetation
. cover. Of these, twelve contributed measurably to the total: timber milkvetch (Astragalus miser
12
