The balance comprised Gambel's oak (Quercus
gambelii), prickly rose (Rosa says), mountain snowberry, and bitterbrush. There were an average
of 32 box elder individuals per acre in this area. Total woody plant density was 1,894 individuals
per acre.
PECOCO Pasture Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 13-16)
Cover
(Table 8)
The dominant Iifeform in this reclamation unit was introduced perennial cool season grasses; they
averaged over 51 percent of total vegetation cover. Intermediate wheatgrass composed almost
nine-tenths of this total. Russian wildrye, orchard grass, smooth brome, and crested wheatgrass
(Agropyron desertorum) composed the balance. Timothy was also present in this area.
Introduced perennial (orbs were the second most abundnat Iifeform, averaging 19% of total
vegetation cover, with cicer milkvetch contributing nearly three-fourths to the Iifeform total. The
remaining quarter was composed of alfalfa and Canada thistle. Curly dock (Rumex crispus) was
• also present in this area. Native perennial cool season grasses averaged 13% of total vegetation
cover. The largest contributor was western wheatgrass with slightly over one-third of the total.
Agassiz bluegrass added one-tenth to the total and basin wildrye added more than Iwo-tenths this
total. Mountain brome, Rocky Mountain fescue, and slender wheatgrass each averaged about
one-tenth of this lifeform's total. Introduced annual 8 biennial forbs contributed 6% to total
vegetation cover, comprising nine species, three of which were quantitatively encountered.
Yellow sweetclover was the most abundant with nearly half of the Iifeform total; hound's tongue
and twolobe speedwell composed the balance with six other species observed as present in this
area. Native shrubs accounted for 6% of total vegetation cover. Of this, big sagebrush made up
over half and mountain snowberry made up four-tenths. Most of the remainder was Woods' rose
and Saskatoon serviceberry was scattered in immeasurable amounts. Native annual and biennial
forbs, adding up to 3% of total vegetation cover, mostly comprised gumweed (90%) and bigfruit
willowherb (10%) (Epilobium brachycarpum). Native perennial forbs contributed just 1 % to total
vegetation cover. Thirteen species were present, four of which contributed quantitatively. Mule's
ear (Wyethia amplexicaulis), wild tarragon (Oligosporus dracunculus ssp. glaucus), blue Flax, and
western yarrow each accounted for one fourth of the Iifeform total. Introduced annual grasses
(entirely Japanese brome) added 0.6% to total vegetation cover. One native annual grass, six-
• weeks fescue (Vulpia octoflora) was also present.
10
