encountered in-this area: Native perennial forbs provided over 8% of total vegetation cover. Blue
• flax and western yarrow contributed approximately one half and one quarter to this total,
respectively. The balance was composed of American vetch, showy goldeneye (Heliomeris
multiflora), pasture sage (Artemisia ludoviciana), and two-groove milkvetch (Astragalus
bisulcatus). Fourteen other native perennial forbs were present, but did not contribute
measurably to cover. Introduced perennial forbs, composed of alfalfa and cicer milkvetch,
averaged just under 8% of the total vegetation cover. Introduced annual grasses composed over
6% of total vegetation cover. Cheatgrass provided 90% of this total. The remaining 10% was
composed of Japanese brome and wheat {Triticum aestivum). Native annual and biennial forbs
averaged about 4% of total vegetation cover. Gumweed provided more than 90% of this total
while Richardson tansymustard (Descurainia incana) accounted for 10%. Seven other native
annual and biennial forbs were also present. Native shrubs produced nearly 2% of total
vegetation cover. Major contributors were Arkansas rose (Rosa arkansana), Saskatoon
serviceberry, bitterbrush, and mountain snowberry. One native tree, box elder (Negundo
aceroides) was also present in this area.
Total vegetation cover was 21.1 % percent. Standing dead, litter, bare soil, and rock cover values
were 4.2%, 31.5%, 36.9%, and 6.3% respectively. Species density averaged 30 species per
100sq.m.
• Production
(Table 5)
Total production observed in the 1998 reclaimed areas was 874.3 pounds per acre. No alfalfa
was collected in this reclamation area.
Woody Plant Density
(Table 6)
Native shrubs averaged 421 stems per acre. Saskatoon serviceberry composed more than one-
third of this total. Mountain snowberry, chokecherry (Padus virginiana ssp. melanocarpa},
Woods' rose (Rosa woodsii), and bitterbrush each averaged approximately one-tenth of the total
native shrub density. The balance was big sagebrush. Box elder was the only native tree in the
area, averaging 4 stems per acre. Total woody plant density was 425 individuals per acre.
2000 Reclaimed Area
(Photographs 9-12)
This area was planted with nursery stock at high rates and no seeding was undertaken. Hence
no cover or production data were collected.
