sampled since water quality results would show the effects of evaporation and
stack use and could not be used to evaluate potential mine impacts. The 1995
samQles and most of the previous water quality samples were analyzed by ACZ
laboratories, Inc. Steamboat Springs, CO, a USEPA certified laboratory. This
report includes data wllected specifically to meet rec~,i rents of the Division
of Minerals and Geology (Dht;), as well as data crollected to meet r~~i*~pnts
of the Colorado Wastewater Discharge Permit System (NPDES permit). A list of
all monitoring stations within the angle-0f-draw of the mines is presented as
Table 5. No new stations were added to Table 5 as a result of mining that
occurred in 1995.
NPDES MJriI7bRING PO1NZ5
The mine has six NPDES discharge tronitoring points (see Map No.'s 4-1, 8-1, and
8-3). All six points were mronitored in accordance with permit requirements
during periods of discharge. Three of the six discharge points experienced
discharge during 1995. Point 001, consisting of effluent frcan a wastewater
treatment facility, discharged continuously throughout the year. Points 002 and
• 006, sediment ponds below the East mine facilities and at the West mine
respectively also had reported discharge. Copies of the DMR cover letters
provided to the Colorado Department of Health (CDOH) and Environmental
Protection Agency are included in the data summaries following this narrative.
One NPDES permit limitation exceedence was recorded and reported during the
year. Outfall 002 exceeded three discharge permit limitations (TSS, Iron & Oil
b Grease). Between May 3rd and May 11th, the Bowie No. 1 Mine received
approximately 1.05 inches of rainfall. An additional 1.1 inches of
precipitation was recorded on May 12th. This unusually heavy rainfall in
combination with leaks in the binwall valve assembly at Pond #4, severely
limited the retention time necessary to meet discharge limits. The problem with
pond #4 was corrected during 1995. The valve was repaired and the binwall was
grouted with a foam type material.
OVFTd C3a0[]id7FU\~R MCtdIR~tiNG WELLS
• Groundwater monitoring wells BOl through BOB are situated in the vicinity of the
East Mire facilities (see Map No. 8-1). Well B07 was monitored for annual water
quality parameters as it is located downstream of the East mine facilities.
2
