2.0 SITE CHARACTERIZATION
This section presents a description of the existing surface and subsurface conditions in the area of
the proposed facilities based upon inspection observations, information provided by ITEC and others, and
the data obtained through the preliminary site investigation.
2.1 Location
' The Cash Mine and adjoining property is located in the Gold Hill mining district, Boulder County,
Colorado. The mill associated with the Cash Mine is located midway between Summerville and Gold Hill,
' south east of Boulder County Road 52. The Cash mine is situated in the northwest quarter of the southeast
quarter of Section 12, Township 1 North, Range 72 West.
2.2 Topography
The site upon which the existing mill and appurtenant facilities are located is comprised of
' moderately sloped foothill terrain, at an elevation of approximately 8,425 feet above mean sea level. The
terrain in the specific vicinity of the existing tailings impoundment is gently sloping, with surface grades in
' the range from approximately 12% to approximately 25%.
2.3 Climate and Hydrology
' The climate in the vicinity of the Gold Hill mill can be characterized as semi-arid, typical of the
foothills in the Front Range area of Colorado. The most representative historical climatological data for the
' Gold Hill area was found to be monthly data recorded at a weather station in Nederland, CO (elevation 8,200
feet AMSL}, located approximately 7.~ miles southwest ofGold Hill. The data represents a recording period
' of 18 years, from 1970 to 1988.
i During the 18-year recording period, the average annual mean temperature was approximately 39°F.
.The average monthly maximum temperature for the period was 53°F, with the highest average monthly
maximum temperature of 75°F occurring in July. The average monthly minimum temperature for the period
was 25°F, with the lowest average monthly minimum temperature of 10°F occurring in January.
' The data from the Nederland station also indicates that the average annual precipitation in the
vicinity of the project site is approximately 17.4 inches. Precipitation is greatest during the months of April,
' May, July and Augus[ (averaging 2.21 ", 2.69", 2.39" and 2.01", respectively), while the least precipitation
is recorded during the months of December, January and February (averaging 0.70", 0.54" and 0.61 ",
' respectively). Summertime precipitation is usually associated with convective showers. Average annual
snowfall depth in the area for the recording period was approximately 127 inches, with the maximum
recorded annual snowfall (1979) amounting to 201 inches. Peak runoff from snowmelt typically occurs
' during the months of May and June.
A discussion of peak storm rainfall events, and the capacity of [he impoundment accommodate
' runoff from such events, is presented in Section 5.0 of this Design Report.
3
1
