• Cover Croo
The entire Pit 1 reclamation area, including stockpile sites 8 end 13, were cover cropped with
winter wheat at a rate of 25 to 30 pounds per acre. The cover crop was sown during November
for the eastern half and during January for the western half, including soil stockpiles. The
area has not yet been permanently seeded.
Weed and Pest Control Activities
Need control was carried out in lore April 1991 in the areas shown on Exhibit 92.3, Meed
Control Plan. Target species included Russian knapweed (Centaurea rebens), Canada thistle
(Cirsium arvense) end field bindweed (COnvolvulus arvensis). Exhihjt 92.3 shows the locations
where control activities occurred. Control locations included concentrated herbicide
application areas and spot application areas.
Herbicides included Tordon 22K and 2, 4, D. These herbicides were combined in a tank mix of
2.5 gallons of 2, 4, D end 2.5 gallons of Tordon 22K mixed with 250 gallons of water.
Shrub end Tree Plantinc
Shrubs and trees were planted in November 1997 at the 10 planting areas shown on Exhibit 92.1.
Table 92.4 summarizes the species end numbers planted et each of the 10 planting areas. The
plantings were conducted during the period of November 5 to 8. Plant materials were 70 cubic
inch containerized stock grown by Plant Propagation Technologies, inc. of Las Cruces, Neu
Nexico.
Site preparation was carried out in areas 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 end 9. The site. preparation
consisted of disking to reduce competing herbaceous vegetation. Areas 3, 6 end 10 did not
require site preparation because of planting pattern and a sufficient reduction in herbaceous
cover.
Planting was carried out using a STIHL power auger with a 4~~ auger bore. Spacing varied from
3 to 5 feet for shrubs end approximately 8 feet for trees. Terra-Sorb synthetic super
absorbent was added et a rate of 1 ounce to all planting holes in planting area 1. This was
done to test the benefits of the absorbent to increased seedling survival end growth. At the
time of planting soil moisture conditons were excellent.
•
5
