Domtar Gypsum ~ "''" ~IIIII
Coaldale Quarry
COLORADO MINED LAND RECLA'•MTION DIVISION
1988 ANNUAL REPORT- COALDALE, COLORADO
File No,: M-77-247, Fremont County

OOMTAR
(P)

CCQ ~ 1989

1988 reclamation efforts were focused on the Gillespie Hill Area in
the Southern end of Coaldale's Affected Land. (see attached map),
Reclamation work included native grass mixture broadcasting, mulching,
and native tree and schrub plantings in the Southern and Southeastern
aspects of Gillespie Hill. Grass mixtures were planted at 4011/acre and
mulching rates 4OO01k/acre. Detailed information on species and relative
percentages of species can be found in the attached field reports.
Approximately 2000 seedlings were planted over the seven acre reclamation
site during the months of April, May, and June, 1988. These included
400 tree seedlings purchased from the Colorado State Forest Service,
430 dormant bare root schrub seedlings (2 yr), from Pleasant Avenue
~ Nursery, Buena Vista, CO, and 1200 live tubeling schrub and forbe seed-
lings also from Pleasant Avenue Nursery. The shrub seedlings are
Coaldale Valley progeny from seed stock taken from parent colonies at
the site. Detailed information on species type and numbers can be
found in the attached field notes,
Survival rates for 1987 plantings were disappointing, 55-60%, due to
heavy winter kill during a year of minimal snow cover and severe deer
browse. Tree seedlings are especially susceptible to mortal damage by
deer browse, even those specimens several years old and too large for
protective cages placed over the tree for the first few years of growth,
Ten year old trees with major damage due to horn rubbing and browse on
Juniper were noted for the first time, Overall, survival rates are in
the range of 70%, but unfortunately much less for Chase species more de-
sireable and more susceptible to serious damage, such as Ponderosa pine,
~~~~-1.~
y J ~~ ,
~ 1-~
Hayden Creek R
P.
