• MINREC, INC., RED CANYON MINE
1998 ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT
HYDROLOGIC YEAR 10/97 - 9/98
The reclamation of the Red Canyon mine site was performed during 1988. Two vegetation
surveys were performed on the reGaimed area to demonstrate vegetation success. They
were performed during year nine (1997) and year ten (1998) of the reclamation liability
period. The vegetation surveys show the vegetation on site meets or exceeds the
vegetation success criteria.
This year's report is an abbreviated version of the 1987 -1997 reports. Monitoring values
are compared with the average of previous values for the same month which generally in-
clude monitoring results from 1981 through 1997. The averages shown in this report are
slightly d'rfferent from prior years reports because the 1997 monitoring results are included
in the averages.
Current monitoring requirements are shown on pages 144 and 144a of the Permit. The
location of the monitoring sites is shown on Map 2.05.6(3)-1. Monitoring efforts were
directed towards the DMG's final bond release concerns so not all of the routine monitoring
• was performed during the year. By letter dated February 5, 1999, the DMG indicated its
sole hydrologic impact concern was the water level in the mine and whether the mine will
eventual{y fill and discharge to the surtace. The source of this concern is the water level
in monitoring well E-1.
SURFACE WATER
Table S-98 shows the surface water monitoring results for this water year compared to the
averages of previous years monitoring results for the same month.
Spot flow readings taken in May will vary because of the timing and intensity of snow melt.
The May 28, 1998 flow recorded for upper Ward Creek was above average with the 4-foot
flume flowing full. The flow in lower Ward Creek, recorded on May 28, 1998, was greater
than the historic average for May. A maximum flow of 82 cfs was recorded at lower Ward
Creek on May 28, 1978 with a minimum of 65 and an average of 73.5 cfs.
No monitoring was performed on Ward Creek in September.
The Division's letter dated March 3, 1994 requested that Minrec sample and analyze Ward
Creek for Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), and the main anions and cations to allow
comparison of current conditions to conditions predicted in the PHC with regard to salinity
• and TDS. The predicted values are presented in the Kaman Tempo Report on pages 68
and 69. The report states that prior to mining, Ward Creek had an average TDS
concentration of 214 mg/I and an average SAR of 0.9.
