Somerset Mining Company
1993 AHR
' Page 4
data for Springs 9 and 10 also show the elevated conductivity
' measurements.
Spring 11 was covered during the reclamation of the Hawksnest east
mine. Therefore, no flow was recorded for Spring 11 during the
' year.
Monitoring data for the Sanborn Creek Mine Discharge, outfall 011,
' is presented in Appendix 2. The mine water discharge has had two
problems during the year. One problem is non-compliance discharge
because the water contained suspended solids in excess of discharge
' permit limits. This problem has been addressed by constructing a
sump in the idle C-Seam workings. This sump will provide
additional settling time for the water and should therefore allow
the water to be discharged in compliance with applicable discharge
' limits.
The second problem is that the mine discharge water has not passed
' the whole effluent toxicity tests required by the Colorado
Department of Health discharge permit. The mine water is toxic to
Ceriodanhnia dubia (water fleas). In response to this problem, the
Colorado Department of Health has directed Somerset Mining Company
to perform an aquatic impairment study to determine if the mine
water discharge is having an adverse effect on the North Fork of
the Gunnison River. This study is to be performed during 1994.
' The results of the study will influence future monitoring
requirements for the mine water.
' The annual mine inflow study is presented on the Sanborn Creek
Mine, Mine Inflow Map, Map 50. The study was performed on January
4, 1994. The estimated mine inflow, based on the study is 175 gpm.
This figure is about 258 higher than the measured flow pumped from
the mine. The discrepancy could be attributed to the accuracy of
measuring the mine inflows or the fact that the flow into the mine
was greater on January 4th than the average inflow for 1993.
Groundwater Information
t Results:
Results of the groundwater monitoring data collected during 1993
' are presented in Appendix 3.
Graphs are included to present flow, conductivity, iron, total
' dissolved solids and Manganese for monitoring wells H-10, B-6, SC-
1, SC-2 and SC-3. The graphs compare monitoring data from 1991
through 1993.
1
t
