' Tailings Pond No• •
Sunnyside Mine
t Silverton, Colorado
Project No. 3120K114
' or slimes. Boulder Creek was flowing at the time of our field
investigation, and discharges to the Animas River to the
south. Tailings placement into Pond 2 has been discontinued
for some time. When constructed, the tailings were placed by
' an upstream deposition method. Tailing was discharged
hydraulically at the outside crest of the pond and allowed to
' flow toward the rear. With this method, gravity was used to
create a deposition change in gradation of the tailing Erom the
front to rear of the pond. The coarse grained, or sand
' fraction of tailings settled out first at the front exterior
perimeter, while the clay or silt sized (slime) fraction was
' carried hydraulically to the rear. As the height of the pond
was raised, portions of the sand fraction were successively
' placed over the slimes. Pond water, from the hydraulic
deposition, was decanted off of the pond. At the time of our
field investigation the surface of the pond was dry.
SCOPE OF SERVICES
The scope of our services was to provide analysis of the
' present stability of Tailings Pond No. 2, and to analyze
stability for the proposed configuration planned during
' reclamation. These plans entail reconstruction of the existing
slope on the tailings pond to 2:1 (horizontal to vertical).
This will be accomplished by removing existing materials on the
face of the pond to the proposed configuration. Tailings
excavated in this manner will be placed on the top surface of
' the pond.
' The services provided by Western Technologies included:
' o Field reconnaissance by engineering staff;
' o Drilling and sampling of borings on the site;
-2
