<br />CHIMNEY ROCK VEGETATION STUDY, 1987 <br />On September 16 and 17, 1987 a vegetation study was conducted at the Chimney <br />Rock Mine to determine the affect of grazing by cattle on the reclaimed area. <br />In order to determine what affect <br />herbaceous cover transects were read <br />reference areas. <br />grazing had on the reclaimed area, <br />on both the reclaimed and Mixed Shrub <br />METHODS <br />All sampling sites xere picked at random. Statistical parameters and <br />equations were the same as those used during baseline data collection. The <br />desired confidence level for adequate statistical interpretation is 80 <br />percent (d..tx). To estimate sample adequacy a minimum of 15 transects were <br />sampled to obtain a preliminary adequacy valve using the following formula: <br />t2s2 <br />Nmin > <br />(dx)2 <br />Where: Nmin minimum number of samples <br />s sample standard deviation <br />t = t statistic (1.282) <br />d =amount of reduction to detect (0. 1) <br />a =sample mean <br />If necessary additional samples were taken until adequacy was met or a <br />minimum of 50 transects were taken. <br />Percentage cover of vegetation (identified by species, rock, litter, and <br />bare ground) was determined during sampling by using a randomly selected <br />50-meter line transect. At 1-m intervals with the line, the first hit along <br />a line projected downward perpendicular to the transect was recorded and <br />placed in one of the previously mentioned categories. Only the first <br />intercepted plant part was recorded. <br />In addition shrub density was estimated on the reclaimed area using a 1 x 50 <br />meter belt transect. <br />
