STORMWATER t•fANAGEMENT PLAN
GOLDEN WONDER MINE
CDPS PERMIT No. CO-0043877
INTRODUCTION MARCH, 1QQZ
The document hereby tendered is a "Stormwater Management
Plan" (SWMP) submitted as a part of the documentation required
before receiving a Metal Mining General Permit. It is a plan to
reduce or eliminate pollution and/or sedimentation which might
occur during precipitation runoff brought about by rapidly melting
snows or thunderstorm activity. There are some phenomena such as
violent cloudbursts or combinations of events such as a devastating
fire followed by significant runoff that could not be prevented by
the efforts of man and which, though very infrequent, must be re-
cognized for their potential and the inability to do anything
about them.
The Golden Wonder Mine is located about 2.0 miles southeast
of Lake City, Hinsdale County, Colorado in the NE4NE4 Sec. 10 and
NWgNWg Sec. 11, T. 43 N., R. 4 W., NMPM. The mine can be reached
by traveling south from Lake City on Colo. Hwy 149 to the Vicker's
Ranch where a person turns east on a private road through the ranch
and up the hill past the bridge across the Lake Fork of the Gunnison
River. Proceed straight ahead up the road between the houses,
through an often locked gate, and up the canyon of a drainage just
north of Park Creek. The road crosses into the Park Creek drainage
and divides north of a large pond. Take the right fork across Ehe_:
Park Creek valley and follow the switchback road through the timber
on the north face of the mountain always staying to the right until
reaching the saddle in the ridge where the road more or less levels
off. The branch straight ahead leads to the lower or 6th level of
the Golden Wonder Mine and the well traveled road to the left then
right almost level across the slope of the mountain leads to the
upper or 3rd level. The drive from Lake City to the mine covers
2.5 to 3 miles because of the winding road.
DESCRIPTION OF MINE ACTIVITIES.
The Golden Wonder Mine is an underground gold mine accessed
through two portals called the 6 or sixth level and the 3 or third
level. Both portals are marked by waste dumps, the upper or third
level dump covering an acre and the lower or sixth level dump cover-
ing 1.5 acres. The surface activities relative to this mine occur
on these dumps except for haulage which is=over=the. roads previously
described. None of dump areas or access roads are surfaced. At
this time there are no buildings on these dumps except for one
small shed and no buildings, except for temporary structures, are
planned.
The upper or 3 level portal is established in a scree or talus
slope which is porous and so permeable that no surface runoff can
occur.
The lower or 6 level portal is established in colluvium, also
extremely porous and permeable and, on the north side of Deadman
Gulch, is on enough of a south and west facing slope that the wind
and sun ordinarily keeps it clear of snow. Runoff from these slopes
has never been observed.
(1.)
