C~

RULE 2.41(2): LOCATIONS AND NUMBER OF ACRES RECLAIMED FOR THAT YEAR.
Approximately two acres of land was placed in a temporary
reclamation status. This land is the long slope below the ditch route
on the north side of the pit. In the autumn of 1985 a company desired
to dispose of some excess topsoil in the pit. The material was of good
quality and we instructed them to place it on this slope. As a result,
between 6 and 12 inches of soil was dumped on the slope. The area was
seeded in February of 1986. Unfort~tely, as of the date of the
inspection for this annual report, little grass was showing on the
slope. A severe lack of moisture combined with unusually warm
temperatures and the south-facing slope has done little to produce an
environment suitable for the growth of the grasses. Soil temperature
measurements at 1:30 PM (Standard Time) on April 28 showed a temperature
of 68 degrees at 6" depth, 84 degrees at 2 inches, and 96 degrees in the
upper 1/4 inch. Moist soil was not found until a depth of 5 to 6
inches. Above that depth the soil was dry and powdery. If sufficient
moisture is received by about May 10, there is still a good chance the
seeding will be successful. If not, then the seeding may be a failure
due to adverse climatic conditions. Examination of the soil showed that
seed was still present, but of course its biological capabilities could
not be determined. It is only hoped that the heat and dryness did not
kill the seed.
RULE 2.41(3): THE LOCATION AND NUMBER OF ACRES IN THE VARIOUS STAGES OF
RECLAMATION (BACRFILLED, GRADED, TOPSOIL REPLACED, REVEGETATED).
Assuming the area seeded in February 1986 is successful and the
grass grows upon arrival of moisture, there will be a total of 4 acres
of land under a revegetation status. Much of this land is steeply
sloping and therefore on the annual report map it appears to be less
than is actually the case. This amount does not include the land on the
highway slope which was generally revegetated prior to the issuance of
the permit.
About 1.5 additional acres is in a backfilling status. This has
been needed in order to move the road southward away from the ditch
corridor.
If the ditch is completed this year, then that will be an
additional approximately 2 acres of land in a reclamation status as the
ditch is the final land use of that portion of the permit area.
Page 2 of 5 Permit 77-213 Sand Pit 1986 Annual Report
