CASTLE CONCRETE COMPANY'S
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
1986 ANNUAL REPORT FOR: SAND PIT
PERMIT NUMBER: 77-213
DATE OF INSPECTION FOR DATA IN REPORT: April 28, 1986
SUMMARY: Most of the activity in the past year involved the alteration
of the ditch route. Minimal extraction occured in the pit. A steep,
south-facing slope was topsoiled and seeded, but due to a dry and hot
period from late February through April, the seeding may be
unsuccessful. During the next year, the ditch route change should be
completed and mining activity will increase resulting in a partial
completion of the connection with the Daniels Sand processing area to
the south as well as lowering the west highwall significantly.
RULE 2.41(1): LOCATION AND NUMBER OF ACRES AFFECTED DURING THAT YEAR.
During the 1985 permit year, about 1 to 2 acres
were affected directly by extraction. As has been the case in past
years, most of the permitted land is affected at one time or another
throughout the year, but mostly for stockpiles and roads rather than
extraction. There is essentially no unaffected land within the permit.
Virtually all of the extraction work occurred along the south side
of the pit. Little was done on the west side due to the close proximity
of the irrigation ditch. During this permit year, little material was
actually taken from this pit. This was due to the waiting required
until completion of the new ditch route under Academy Boulevard. Once
that is finished, the ridge of sand separating this operation and the
Daniels Sand Pit #2 processing area to the south can be removed, as well
as final work on the west side of the pit initiated.
Progress on the completion of the ditch route was slow. The large
volume of sand on the east side of Academy Boulevard and within the
Daniels Sand permit took several months to remove. Delays were also
encountered in acquiring approval from the Colorado Division of Highways
for a permit to place the ditch pipe beneath Academy Boulevard. Then
problems were encountered in pushing the pipe under the highway, namely,
the initial company doing the work did not have sufficient force in
their equipment to complete the work and another company with larger
equipment had to be brought in to finish the work. It is anticipated
the pipe will be in place by the end of May, assuming it does not get
stuck in the sand again.
Page 1 of 5 Permit 77-213 Sand Pit 1986 Annual Report
