Snyder Quarry
Weeds and Reclamation Work
by
Mark A. Heffner, Ecologist
RECEIVED
JUN 0 9 2003
Southwestern Ecological Services Division of Minerals and Ceolagy
May 5, 2003
Background: It has been known for some time that the Snyder Quarry site contains some
noxious weeds. The presence of noxious weeds is not particulazly uncommon on mining sites,
but Colorado law requires such weeds be controlled. On May 2, 2003, an inspection of the site
was performed by myself and B.J. Fuller of Castle Concrete Company. During this inspection,
the primary emphasis was to identify the species and locations of the primary noxious weed
species and to define the extent and pattern of the infestation so control measures can be taken.
Also, examination of the reclamation work at the quarry and along the access road was done.
The report is divided into two parts. The first part will deal with weeds and the second
part with suggestions on reclamation work that could be done.
Weed Infestations
General Condition: Although noxious weeds are certainly present at the site, the extent of those
weeds is not as great as it could be. In general it appears most of the weeds are confined to the
eastern portions of the site in the vicinity of the quarry entrance. Some weed growth was also
found along the access road. Several species of weeds were found at the site and some are
particularly tenacious and need to be dealt with before they spread further or become a much
more serious problem. Two species in particular aze of concern -Diffuse Knapweed and Canada
Thistle. It appears the latter is more serious than the former, but both have populations that are of
serious sizes. Several other noxious weeds were also found, but they do not have large
populations and do not seem to be expanding very rapidly. Although leafy spurge was previously
found, no evidence of this species was found during this inspection. That does not mean it has
died out. The season is still early and it may not be very evident yet. Further examinations for
this species should be done in late Mayor early June to determine if it is still present on the site.
Weed Map: Included in this report is a map showing the primary locations of weed
populations. Following is a description of the locations identified on the map.
Snyder Quarry Weeds Survey Report - May 2003 Page 1
