revealed visual dominance by Kochia scoparia, though perennial grass clumps were
evident in the west half of the seeding. The east half of Area 5 was interseeded in
• November 2002. Overall total vegetation cover was estimated at 20 percent. Total
herbaceous production was not estimated.
2000 RECLAMATION AREAS
Two former haul road corridors were seeded to the permanent seed mix in 2000, the
corridor (Area 19) between Areas 11-13 and 20 and 22, and the comdor (Area 6)
southeast and east of the 1987 east pazcel. Interestingly, in areas where the topsand was
amended with Al Organics material, perennial grass growth was noted. In Area 19,
between Areas 12 and 2Q a significant growth of Bouteloua gracilis was noted. Along the
southern segment of Area 6, significant perennial grass growth was noted in the drill rows.
While both corridors contain significant cover of Kochia scoparia, this annual weed
appeazs to serve as a cover crop, providing shade and desiccation protection for seedling
perennial graminoids. Total vegetation cover was estimated at 30 percent.
COMPARISON OF RECLAIMED AND REFERENCE AREAS
Monitoring of the revegetated azeas allows for the identification of vegetation community
development trends during the extended liability period. This evaluation also assists in
decisions regazding yearly grazing, husbandry practices, interseeding, fertilizing, and weed
management. Comparison of the reclaimed azea values for vegetation cover, herbaceous
production, and species composition with the values from the reference azea or standazd,
• indicates whether revegetation has been successful, or whether additional measures need
to be initiated to enhance vegetation community development. The tables below allow the
comparison of the parameter values with the standard to be achieved, either from the
reference azea in the case of vegetation cover and herbaceous production, or the
established standazd for species composition.
Total Vegetation Cover (2002)
Reference Area 1995 Rec.
