The Aspen Test Plot was constructed, fenced and imgation system installed to the
site. During the fall of 2004, 400 selected aspen trees were planted according to the plan and
timetable included in the Seneca II-W perm it document. The study examined growth, survival, and
• water status during the 2005 growing season. The aspen study report, `Tranrplanting fLpen on Reclaimed
Coal-Mine Iltndr Uring Drip Irrigation"is includ ed as an Attachment to this ARR.
• Monitoring
ESCO Associates, Inc conducted revegetation monitoring of permanently revegetated areas and shrub
establishment monitoring in the shrub plot areas doting the summer of 2005. ~ The 2005 Annual
Revegetation Monitoring report is submitted as a separate document.
• Weed Control
Survey fox noxious weeds was carried out on the II-W Mine permit azea in 2005. Monitoring was
conducted in 2005 to determine the need or level of retreatment necessary for aeeas sprayed in 2004.
An area of the lower "D" pit was observed to contain an infestation.of black henbane, a biennial
noxious weed. The area was sprayed with 2,4,D and Tordon in the spring and again in the fall.
Reseeding of the sprayed area was conducted in November.
Canada thistle was the primary target species in all control areas, with lesser activity directed towards
areas of hounds tongue and whitetop. The applied herbicide consisted of a tank mix of 2.5 gallons of
22K Tordon and 2.5 gallons of 2,4,D and 250 gallons of water. Escort at the rate of one (1) oz. per
acre was spot sprayed on the whitetop. Control areas were sprayed in June, July and September. See
attached map, 2005 Weed Spray Locations, for the extent of weed control spraying:
. A spot spray gun was used to concentrate control activities on target areas, reducing potential impacts
to adjacent desirable vegetation. The herbicide mix based on recommendations'from the Colorado
State Extension Servtce, was mixed and applied by the Seneca Mine Reclamation Manager who is a
certified applicator. The weed control areas will continue to be monitored in 2006 for effectiveness
