2001 Soil Sampling: Seneca Mine, Hayden Colorado
• Seneca II-W
10 sites were sampled on approximately 150 acres of land. Field descriptions are
located in Appendix IV and lab data is located in Appendix II.
Topsoil- All topsoil in all sample pits classifies as suitable topsoil. The results follow:
Depth- The average depth of topsoil is 14.3 inches (1.3 feet). Depth of topsoil
ranges 10 to 20 inches (.8 to 1.7 feet). The topsoil in all sample pits consisted
of two horizons. The upper horizon averages 5 inches of thickness and
ranges in depth from 4 to 6 inches in thickness. The lower topsoil horizon
averages 10 inches in thickness and ranges from 5 to 15 inches in thickness.
The difference in horizons is due to structure and dry and moist consistence
discussed below. All other characteristics between horizons are the same.
Textures- Textures range sandy loam, loam, clay loam and clay.. Clay
content averages 37 percent and ranges 22 to 52 percent, sand content ,.
averages 21 percent and ranges 18 to 41 percent. Silt content averages 42
percent and ranges 27 to 36 percent. .
Rock Fragments- Rock fragments average 5 percent and range 0 to 20
percent. Rock Fragments are predominantly gravel size (2mm to 75mm} of
sedimentary origin, primarily sandstone.
Structure- The upper horizon in all sample pits are moderate medium and
coarse platy and coarse and very coarse sub-angular blocky structure. The
resultant structure and depth of the structure is consistent with a mechanically
disked layer. Vegetation analysis discussed below did not indicate that any
sites are problematic. The lower topsoil horizon is consistently moderate
coarse and very coarse subangular blocky structure. This is consistent with
mechanical redistribution of soil. Vegetation analysis discussed below did not
indicate that such structure is presenting a problem to p-ant growth.
Consistence- The dry consistence of the upper topsoil layer ranges from
slightly hard to very hard, typical of disked soil and consistent with soil
textures that have been mechanically manipulated. Vegetation analysis
discussed below did not indicate that such consistence is presenting a
problem to plant growth.
Lab Data- Lab data is located in Appendix II. Both the upper and lower topsoil
horizons, differing only in their mechanical treatment, have the same chemical
properties. pH ranges 6.8 to 7.8 and averages 7.4 which is slightly alkaline.
Organic matter averages 4.9 percent and ranges 3.6 to 6.8. These results
and all other lab data indicates topsoil in all sample pits as suitable (Appendix
III, Table-2).
11/09/01
