• Of the species encountered, six perennial grasses and one annual grass represented
greater than three percent relative cover. These species included; Bromus marginatus
' ; (28.84%), Calamovi/fa longifolia (31.16%), Agropyron cristatum (l 1.16%),
Sporobolus cryptandrus (7.44%), Andropogon ha/lii (5.12%), Bouteloua gracilis
(5.12%), and Bromus tectorum (4.65%).
1986 RECLAbIATION AREA
The 1986 Reclamation Area encompasses approximately 41.3 acres of reclaimed pit in
the central area of the Keenesburg Mine permit area. The 1986 Reclamation Area is
composed of three parcels (west, central, and east) separated by north-south haul road
corridors. This area is nearly flat with a gentle slope (< 1 °) to the north and east.
Reclamation and coincident revegetation within this area took place in 1986. Replaced
soils were generally sandy in texture. Specific sampling information for the 1985
Reclamation Area is contained in Table 4 and Table 8.
Vegetation Cover
Total vegetation cover of the 1986 Reclamation Area was 24.00%. Based on cover
sampling, graminoids represented 23.20% mean cover (96.69% re'ative cover) and
• forbs accounted for 0.80% mean cover (3.31% relative cover).
The dominant plant species was Sporobolus cryptandrus (sand dropseed) at 7.80%
mean cover (32.64% relative cover). Sub-dominant species included Calamovilfa
longifolia (prairie sandreed) with 6.20% mean cover and 25.62% relative cover and
Mdropogon hallii (sand bluestem) with 5.00% mean cover and 21.07% relative cover.
Additional significant components included; Bouteloua gracilis (blue grams) at 1.40%
mean cover (5.79% relative cover), Bromus marginatus (mountain brome) with 1.00%
mean cover (4.13% relative cover), and Schirachyrium scoparium (little bluestem) with
0.80% mean cover and 3.31 % relative cover.
Vegetative litter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material)
comprised 58.60% ground cover within the 1986 Reclamation Area. Bare soil
comprised 17.40% of the ground cover encountered in the 1986 Reclamation Area.
Herbaceous Production
Total herbaceous production on the 1986 Reclamation Area was 114.43 g/m2 (1020.00
1 161st). Perennial grasses dominated herbaceous production, contributing 106.83 g/m2
(952:26 Ib/ac) or 93 percent of total herbaceous production. Annual grasses
J contributed 0.03 g/m (0.2616/ac), or 0.02 percent of herbaceous production in this
. area. Perennial forbs were present in the production sampling in this area and
l contributed 2.35 g/m2 (20.95 ]b/ac), accounting for 2 percent of the total mean
J
_g..
