~ Vegetation Cover
,•
Total vegetation cover of the 1985 Reclamation Area was 21.00%. Based on cover
sampling, graminoids represented 20.00% mean cover (95.35% relative cover), fortis
accounted for 0.80% mean cover (3.72% relative cover), and shrubs 0.20% mean
cover (0.93% relative cove).
_ _ The co-dominant plant species were CalamovilFa longi(olia (prairie sandreed) with
6.40% mean cover and 31.16% relative cover and Bromus marginatus (mountain
brome) at 6.20% mean cover (28.84% relative cover). Sub-dominant species included
_ Agropyron cristatum (crested wheatgrass) with 2.40% mean cover and 11.16% relative
cover, Sporobolus cryptandrus (sand dropseed) with 1.6% mean cover and 7.44%
relative cover. Additional significant components included; Andropogon hallii (sand
• bluestem) with 1.00% mean cover and 5.12% relative cover, Bouteloua gracilis (blue
grama) at 1.00% mean cover and 5.12% relative cover, and Bromus tectorum
(cheatgrass) with 1.00% mean cover and 4.65% relative cover.
Vegetative litter (prior years growth, dead wood, and other biologic organic material)
comprised 52.80% ground cover within the 1985 Reclamation Area. Bare soil
comprised 26.20% of the ground cover encountered in the 1985 Reclamation Area.
Herbaceous Production
Total herbaceous production on the 1985 Reclamation Area was 87.33 g/m2 (778.44
16/ac). Perennial grasses dominated herbaceous production, comprising 84.45 g/m2
(754.91 ]b/ac) or 97 percent of total herbaceous production. Annual grasses
contributed 0.24 g/m (2.14 lb/ac), or 0.3 percent to herbaceous production in this
area. No perennial (orbs were present in the production sampling in this area. Annual
fortis accounted for 2.64 g/m2 (23.53 16/ac) of the reference area herbaceous
production. Annual fortis provided 3 percent of the total herbaceous production in this
area.
Species Diversity
I.
l
Within the 1985 Reclamation Area three lifeforms were represented. The total number
of species encountered during cover sampling was eleven (I 1). They included seven
species of perennial grasses, one annual grass species, one annual forb, one perennial
forb, and one woody shrub species. Of the species encountered on the 1985
Reclamation Area, eight (8) were native and three were introduced. Perennial species
outnumbered annual species by nine to two. Seasonality of 1985 Reclamation Area
species was split between cool season, warm season and evergreen species. Four
graminoids were cool season species and four were warm season species. All forb
species were identified as cool season. The shrub species was evergreen.
-~-
