Memorandum to Christine Johnston
October 7, 1999
Page 2
i

Overview of Fieldwork on September 15-17, 1999
Ron Hanna and I traversed the bottom of Box Canyon on foot on September 15, because there
was no other means of access. On September 16 and 17 we traveled to the remaining sites on
two 4-wheel-drive ATVs. The speed and efficiency of our investigation was enhanced many
times with the ATVs, compared with any other form of transportation.
The sites and azeas visited were selected to yield the most important subsidence information,
based on Seld experience and knowledge of subsidence processes. Pictures were taken at each
site and selected images are included in this report. The following sites and areas, which are
shown on the map (Figtue 1), were visited in the following chronological order:
September 15:
1. Traversed up the main drainage of Box Canyon above projected longwall Panel 18.
2. Took pictures of the azea between Box Canyon and Sylvester Gulch from the north side of
the North Fork of the Gunnison River (North Fork).
3. Revisited sites visited during September 1998 above the northeastern part of Panel 10.
September 16:
1. Traversed the mined and unmined parts of the Apache Rocks Permit Area.
2. Revisited sites where observations were made last yeaz in the Apache Rocks Permit Area.
September 17:
1. Revisited most sites above longwall Panels 8 and 9 on Jumbo Mountain that were Srst
investigated by the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG) in 1996 and
when observations were made in 1997 and 1998.
2. Traversed longwall Panels 14 and 18 through 24 on West Flatiron and south of West
Flatiron as part of a premining subsidence evaluation.
Observations at Individual Sites on September 15, 16, and 17, 1899
The following site information is summarized from the notes taken by me and Ron Hanna at the
vazious sites and site areas. On Figwe 1, new locations aze sequentially numbered and aze
enclosed in squares; revisited sites aze cycled and are numbered like they were in September
1998. CDMG sites aze numbered like they have been since 1996, and aze enclosed in triangles.
Wright Water Engineers, Inc., 2490 W. 26'" Avenue, Ste. 100A, Denver, CO 80211
Tel. 303/480-1700; Fax 3031480-1020, e-mail:krvrtight@wrightwater.com
