MANGOS TROUT'''FARMS
8111 & Carrie Saikie
Maacos, Colorado 81328
(303 ) 533-7980 ~ECE11/FL7
December 6, 1994
Mined Land Reclamation Board
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, Co. 80203
DEC ~ 2 1894
Division or M,nera,y s t3ewo91
Re: Orion pit Application (Sand and Gravel), T35N, R14W, Sec. 1,2
To Whom it May Concern:
We oppose the Orion pit application due to several reasons. First,
over the past 3 years we have raised rainbow trout with tremendous
results. Our success is due mainly to a flow of spring water which
surfaces on our property. Our property has two ponds bordering the
Mancos River on the South. The spring water passes thru four
earthen raceways for raising trout then enters the upper pond,
which is approximately one acre in size. The water then spills
directly into the lower pond which is about one half of an acre.
Surface tailwater is diverted "from the spring water" at three
different locations, water quality in the fishery is of great
importance.
The spring water never exceeds
flow during the winter months
gallons per minute), to over 1
the summer. Although this is n~
facility, once complete we will
annually.
60 degrees nor goes below 40. The
is around 6/lOths of a foot(270
c.f.s. Next year, we plan on
constructing a hatch house on an isolated spring which produces 30
gpm.
We are concerned about future plans and even the ability of raising
fish when it is unknown whether or not the water will be diverted
or contaminated.
Not only are we concerned about ground water, but flood and spring
run-off as well. Our property lays at the bottom of a drainage
which includes a large percentage of the proposed Orion pit.
00196
