Summer and Fall Water Report
1997
Apex #2 Mine
Permit C-81-011
Surface Water
In all of 1997, the single sediment pond for the entire disturbed area did not discharge;
it only contained water in the spring as a result of snowmelt. All disturbed area is
channeled into the sediment pond except for a small exemption area of less than 0.1
acre located at the reclaimed office area. The sediment pond discharge is permitted
with the Colorado Department of Health as NPDES Permit #COG-850041. (The permit
was formerly CO-0036668). Quarterly DMR forms are attached for the year. Quarterly
sediment pond inspections revealed no problems with functionality of the pond.
Trout Creek, the perennial stream located adjacent to the reclaimed yard area, was
tested quarterly for pH, Specific conductance, temperature and flow. These results are
also attached for above and below the minesite. In 1997 a revision was submitted to
abandon the downstream monitoring site since it was possibly affected by the P&M
Edna Mine. The sample location was moved to immediately downstream of the
reclaimed area. The data for 1997 showed normal conditions, with normal flows in
Trout Creek due to good rainfall. Beaver activity was noticed downstream of the mine
on the Baumgartel property.
All portal seals are intact and do not show any signs of seepage or other problems. The
mine or its reclamation has not had any adverse effect on the prevailing hydrologic
balance. The diversion ditch above the minesite along the residential access road
required cleaning as did the culvert crossing of this diversion under the Trout Creek
Road. This work was also completed in the fall of 1997.
Ground Water
There are no monitoring wells in the permit area or in the surrounding area. In 1997 a
revision was submitted to install two new shallow groundwater monitoring wells
upstream and downstream of the mine reclaimed area. These wells will relace the old
upstream and downstream wells. This was done since the downstream well and surface
