MINREC, INC. ANNUAL HYDROLOGY REPORT PAGE 2
SURFACE WATER QUALITY
Appendix I contains the water quality information collected for North Thompson Creek.
The quality information taken on North Thompson Creek, in May and September, is
designed to monitor quality at the approximate high and low flow.
The variation of the quality of North Thompson Creek as it passed the mines this year was
similarto that which would be expected from the baseline monitoring data and the factthat
the Abandoned Mined Lands peat bog watertreatment system is discharging into the creek
between the upstream and downstream water monitoring points.
MINE FLOWS
All of the water flowing into the No. 1 Mine flows out through the 6-inch PVC pipe.
The No. 3 Mine, (Outfall 007), has two separate sources of discharge. One is from a point
source (spring) within the mine that is piped directly to the surface. This good quality water
was the source of the discharge from the No. 3 Mine, (Outfall 007), from 1986 through
1994. The water level in the mine fluctuated from 1986 through 1994 but no water
discharged directly from the mine. During the second quarter of 1995, wet spring weather
caused the mine to fill and begin discharging iron laden water.
In order to treat this iron laden water, a 4-inch diameter PVC pipe was installed to convey
the discharge from the No. 3 mine to the long pond located at the No. 1 Mine. The
discharges from the mines were combined effective August 11, 1995. The combined
discharge from the mines is treated by the passive water treatment system and is
discharged through Outfall 001.
MINE WATER QUALITY
The discharge from the No. 3 Mine and No. 1 Mine were combined on August 11, 1995.
The average flow measurements from the No. 3 Mine (Outfall 007) for the period 1990
through 1994 are summarized below.
NO. 3 MINE DISCHARGE
Year 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994
Flow (gpm) 6.7 6.8 5.5 10.4 8.0
Water from the No.1 Mine and No. 3 Mine continues to be treated by the passive water
treatment system. The quality of the discharge is presented in a table in Appendix II. The
quality of the discharge from the mines varied very little from last year. The flow was the
same, conductivity and TDS both increased slightly during the year.
