Soil Balance and R
l
t
ep
acemen
The soil balance is calculated for Yoast Mtne by comparing the disturbance area that
requires soil replacement as of December 31, 1998 with the soil reserve in stockpiles. The
disturbance area for Yeast Mine, shown on drawing Y98TSREM, totaled 391.5 acres on December
31, 1998. No soil was salvaged o r needs to be replaced ben each the soil stockpile sites.
Also, Haul Road A and Haul Road B ate permanent postmi ne facilities (9.9 acres), soil will
only be replaced on a portion of those roads effectively narrowing them [0 20 feet wide.
Topsoil has been replaced on 63 .3 acres of disturbed area through December 31, 1998.
Therefore, the total disturbance area cequi ring topsoil as of December 31, 1998 was 318.3
acres a[ the mine site.
Soil Replacement Thickness
The soil replacement thickness for the first five-year permit term was projected to be 1.0
feet for [he mine area. The Boll balance as of December 31, 1998 was calculated as follows:
Mine Area
Total disturbance area 391. 5 acres
•
Permanent Facilities d Topsoil replacetl = ( ~3. 2 (acres
Disturbance area requiring soil = 318. 3 acres
Soil in stockpiles (Table 98.1 = 449. 8 acre-feet
Mean replacement depth available = 1. 4 feet
By dividing the soil available by the area requiring soil replaced, we arrrve a[ [he 1998
soil balance thickness of 1.4 feet for the mine area. More than enough topsoil has been
salvaged to reclaim [he existing disturbance with the permitted replacement thickness of
1.0 fee[.
Rev eg elation
Revegetation activities in 1998 rn cl uded no permanent revegetation. All stockpiled topsoil
was seeded with the Topsoil Stockpile Mix, (see [able 98.2(. Some spot spraying for
burcdock was done near the powerLlne crossing. SCC reclamation technician used 2,9-D mixed
2 gal per 100 gallon of water for this spot spray. Also, two small patches of Canada
thistle were sprayed on the "A" haul road near the powerlines with [he same herbicide
mixture.

3
