Gillis:
As you are aware, under the Deserado Mine permit, Western Fuels-Utah (WFU) had
agreed to conduct a subsidence monitoring progrsm for longwall panel no. 1 (LW1)
and room-snd-pillar pane] no. 5 (RP5). At the time this program was considered,
WFU hsd a mine plsn to concurrently extract these longwsll and room-and-pillar
panels and, thus, carry the subsidence monitoring program simultsneousl}• over the
longwall and roam-and-pillar panels. Mining of the room-and-pillsr panel was felt
necessary to augment the annual production from the longwall panel and the develop-
ment entries in order to meet the annual production schedule. After longwall
production began, we achieved a longwall productivity which was considerably higher
than that previously anticipated. Becsuse of the increased longwsll productivity,
mining of the room-and-pillar panel became unnecessary to meet the snnual produc-
tion schedules. In fact, we do not plan any room-snd-pilisr mining in our current
5-year mine plan nor do we foresee such mining taking place in the near future.
WFU has recently concluded a major portion of the subsidence monitoring program
over LW1. In addition to conducting an serisl photography flight for base mapping
of the L;'Jl and RP5 area, we have crnducted three air photogrsphy flights on three
sepsrste occssions (spring 1987, Psll 1987 snd spring 1988) over the LWl area to
measure the ground subsidence. To this date, more thsn 530,000 has been spent on
the program. Esch aerial photography flight snd associated mspping costs about
87,000.
Suite #308
40i Urban Sveet
Lakea~ood.
