As in
the previous six (6) years, the market for coal has remained soft,
resulting in relatively low production rates. Coal production at the Kerr
Mine for the year was approximately 38,000 tons or five (5) percent of
permitted capacity. Approximately 16,000 BCY of overburden were removed
from Pit No. 1 and backfilled into the 720 Pit. Kerr Coal Company
continued backfilling overburden from the Existing Overburden Stockpile
in to the 720 Pit during the period, resulting in over 565,000 compacted
cubic yards of stockpiled overburden being placed in the 720 Pit.
Overall , approximately 585,000 compacted cubic yards of overburden
material were placed in the 720 Pit during the year. No new areas were
backfilled to their approximate original contour, graded, retopsoiled, or
revegetated during the year.
All mining activities during the year were confined to the previously
disturbed Pit No. 1 area. No new disturbance was created during the year.
LOCATION AND SIZE OF AFFECTED AREAS
1 . Mining and Topsoil Removal
No new areas were disturbed and no topsoil was removed during
1989. The total active mine area at Pit No. 1 is 28.29 acres.
Mining is completed in the 720 Pit area and no new disturbance
associated with the 720 Pit has occurred or is expected to
occur. A total of 49.20 acres remains open for future
backfilling. The areas described above are shown on the
attached 1989 Reclamation Map.
1
