retort discharge water. Sampling of the compliance well and mina-water discharge was
conducted (per the Closure Plan) on a quarterly basis up to September 2001.
In accordance with the Closure Plan, Well LWCW-1 A and the clean (non-retort) mine-water
discharge pipe were sampled 2 times during the reporting period (2001). Well LWCW-lA and
the mine water have been sampled a total of 8 sampling events to date. The Closure Plan
specifies the well and mine water discharge to be sampled 8 times over 5 quarters. Therefore,
sampling at Well LWCW -lA will be discontinued until a passive mine water treatment system ar
other solution is implemented at the mine. Once data from the sampling events are used to
establish NPLs, an ahernate sampling schedule will be established for the remainder of the
closure monitoring period. This alternate schedule will probably be modified to accommodate
construction and implementation of the planned passive water treatment system or other closure
ahernative.
3.3 Mine•WaterandRetortWaterDischarge
Measurements of clean (non-rdort) mino-water discharge and retort-water discharge are
conducted on a weekly basis when possible. These data are being collected by GSHI to support
the evaluation of ahernatives for mine waled treatment and mine closure.
4.0 Reclamation Activities in 2001
No surface reclamation activities have been conducted at the Logan Wash Mine site since the
mid-1980's, and GSHI did not rdmduct surface reclamation activities at the Logan Wash Mine
Site during the current reporting period Several other activities related to mine closure were
conducted as described in Section 5.0 below.
5.0 Maintenance Activities
Maintenance activities included periodic inspections of mine roads, portals, and underground
drainage systems associated with the rntorts and general mine workings. Maintenance activities
conducted at the mine and Pond 1 are summarized in the following sections.
5.1 Mine Maintenance
During the reporting period, GSHI inspected the Logan Waste Mine site on a weekly basis.
Inspection of the mine site was typically restricted to the surface areas of the mine benches, roads,
and portals. Retort water levels and flow status were periodically checked in the mine. Water
samples were collected at RetoeYs 4 through 8 in Apri12001. The analytical results from these
samples are to be used for the evaluation of water chemistry in support of fuhue passive water
treatment design.
Several modifications were made to the retort drainage lines within the mine to provide effective
drainage of rntort water. In June 2001, repairs were made to the retort discharge pipeline for
Retorts 4, 5, 6, ?, and 8. lhains for Retorts 4, 5, seed 6 wede replaced as the old buried steel
pipeline had become clogged. Polyethylene pipe was used as replacement pipe.
Repairs aril needed modifications were made on drain lines for Retorts 7 and 8. All repairs were
successful in maintaining drainage from the retorts.
3 of4
