The description of mapping units here
accompanier a map on which the vegetation/ lend use of the specified additional areas has been
delineated. This description supplements that present in the previous report prepared by ESCO
(1987).
MAPPING UNITS IDENTIFIED IN DOWE FLATS SUPPLEMENTAL AREAS
NATURAL YEOETATION TTPES
0 -Dry Upland Grassland. This unit corresponds to the grassland for which a detailed species
list was compiled on Limestone Ridge. It represents a natural grassland variably degraded by
livestock grazing. Plant species conspicuous in the occurrence of the type in the northern Dowe
Flats area surveyed for this work include the perennial grasses Fendler ihreeawn (Arisiide
fendleriana), blue grams (Bouteloua arecilis), western wheatgress (Aoroovron smithii), ring
muhly (Muhlenberpia torrevi), the annual grasses cheaigress (Bromus tectorum) and Japanese
brome (Bromus iaaonicus), the perennial forbs blenkeiflower (Gaillerdia eristata), low
sunflower (Helienthus pumilus), blue flex (Linum lewisii), narrowleaf scurfpea (Psorelea
tenuifolia), Pacific osier (Aster chilensis), common bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), yellow
stemless eveningprimrose (Oenothere brachycerpe), and slenderbush buckwheat (Eriogonum
effusum), the annual (or biennial) forbs musk thistle (Carduus nutans), yellow sweetclover
(Melilotusofficinalis), Patagonia Indienwheai (Planieoooaiaaonie), pennyroyal (Hedeoma
hirDjda), mullein (Verhescum thepsus), andallysum (Allysum minus), end the succulent
pricklypear cactus (Opuntia polyacenthe).
WW -Western Wheatgress Grassland. These areas occur on heavy soils on low slope areas in
the potential overburden storage area on the northern end of Dowe Flats. Along with western
wheatgrass (Agropvron smithii ),dominance is shared with streambenk wheaigress ( ro ron
dasvstachvum var. rioerium ). Other species locally conspicuous include the perennial grass
foxtail barley (Hordeum iubatum ),the annual grasses cheatgress, Japanese brome, the
perennial forbs fog fruit (Phyla cuneifolia), two-groove milkvetch (Astragalus bisulptus),
Short milkvetch (Astragalus shortianus), Dalmation toedflax (Lineria dalmatica), Pacific ester
bastard toadflax (Commandre umbelleta), end scarlet globemallow (Sphaerelcea coccinea), and
the annual (or biennial) forbs pennyroyal, allysum, end moth mullein (Verbascum blatieria).
SR -Sedge/ Rush Wei Areas. These areas, occurring in depressions end drainage bottoms, may
quelifiy es wetlands, depending on the abundance of wetland indicator species at particular
locations (as may certain locations in the Riparian Forest unit). A wetland inventory and
delineation is being concurrently mnducied by Aquatic end Wetland Consultants. Species present
include Nebraska sedge (Carex nebrascensis), broom sedge (Carex scooerie), Baltic rush
(Juncus arcticus ssp. balticus), interior rush (Juncus interior), foxtail barley, tall fescue
~ ~ .~~ .~
