ACZ
Ms. Cathy Begej
Page Three
March 13, 1990
The five (5) acre area located at the north end of the 720
Pit will be reclaimed as soon as an adjacent area of equal
or larger size has been brought to approximate original
contour and can serve as an effective operational buffer
zone. In addition to Kerr's commitment to perform
reclamation as contemporaneously as possible with mining
operations, Kerr is also committed to permanent and
effective reclamation. A buffer zone of 300 to 600 feet
between reclaimed and active backfilling areas is necessary
to assure that reclaimed areas are not redisturbed by
adjacent backfilling, grading and reclamation operations.
Accordingly, the five (5) acre area in question will remain
as a buffer zone until at least 300 to 600 feet of adjacent
pit area has been backfilled to its approximate original
contour.
Although these responses may not necessarily meet your desires, Kerr believes
that the best utilization of our resources is to continue allocating them to
achievement of reclamation. Allocating these limited and valuable resources
towards demonstrating what has already occurred is counterproductive and
effectively reduces the amount of reclamation which can be performed. Please
be assured that Kerr's continuing commitment regulatory compliance and
achievement of reclamation at the Kerr Mine remains as strong as ever.
If you have any questions regarding these matters, please do not hesitate to
contact me directly, or feel free to contact Mr. George Patterson at the Kerr
Mine or Mr. Richard Munson in Kerr's Denver office.
Sincerely,
AC nc.
David R. Gossett
DRG:kf
cc: George V. Patterson
Richard A. Munson
F. Jay James
