i <br />ii <br />i' <br />I' <br />~~ <br />' li <br />~i <br />i, <br />~I <br />1 ii <br />1 I~ <br />i. <br /> <br />i, <br />,. <br />I' <br />it <br />' I. <br />I.. <br />~: <br />I <br />,' <br /> <br />'~ <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />GEOTECHNICAL AND DESIGN STUDIES <br />MOUNT GUNNISON COAL MINE <br />SOMERSET, COLORADO <br />FOR MERRICK AND COMPANY <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br />1.1 GENERAL <br />Merrick and Company is currently designing surface struc- <br />tures and facilities related to a proposed ARCO underground <br />coal mine located near the town of Somerset, to the south of <br />the North Fork of the Gunnison River, approximately eight miles <br />east of Paonia, Colorado. <br />GEO-HYDRO Consulting, Inc. has been assisting Merrick and <br />Company in the evaluation of the landslides which have been <br />identified on the site of the proposed mine; the landslides will <br />influence the proposed construction and they have to be taken <br />into account in the design to avoid the renewal of old defor- <br />mations or the triggering of new sliding during the construc- <br />tion or during the life time of the mine. <br />GEO-HYDRO has been performing the geotechnical studies in <br />several phases; a report titled "Progress Report, Landslides <br />at Mount Gunnison Mine, Somerset, Colorado, for Merrick and <br />Company" was submitted on July 19, 1980. The report dealt large- <br />ly with the delineation of the landslides on the site and with <br />the estimation of their character. <br />~.r,~~.~..~.K <br />
