Through revenues generated by the tax, the County seeks to
improve the quality of life for its residents by protecting important wildlife habitats, agricultural
(ands, scenic vistas, community buffers, recreational opportunities, and other open space values.
Click here to learn about the County Open Space Advisory Committee (COSACI. This tax generates over $3.5 million annually for the
preservation of open space, the creation of trails and the development of parks. In 1998,
approximately $2.5 million of the total revenue generated by the tax was specifically allocated
towazd the preservation of open space.
PRIORITIES: Douglas County seeks to protect open space by accomplishing a variety of
conservation objectives, including:
• Preservation of important wildlife habitat and
movement corridors;
• Perpetuation of the County's rural landscape and agricultural heritage;
• Creation of community buffers;
• Protection of scenic views, historic properties, and
archaeological resources; and
• Enhancement of recreational opportunities.
To maximize the impact of limited funding and to enhance the effectiveness of the program, the
Douglas County Open Space Program focuses acquisition efforts in five priority areas throughout
the County, including: Northern Mountain Backdrop ("NMB"), High Plateau ("HP"), North
Natural Area ("NNA"), Cherry Creek Condor ("CCC"), and South I-25 Conservation Corridor
("SICC").
~ ora 9/IS/00 S:I3 AM
