' minimizing traffic over initial lifts of fill above these materials. Open pipes shall be temporarily
' capped, as needed, for protection from runoff flows or nearby earthwork in progress.
Fill shall be of inorganic soil or rock materials. The suitability of all materials intended for use
in fill construction shall be subject to approval by the Engineer. Except as othettivise specified,
or approved by the Engineer, compacted fill materials shall be placed on moist surfaces.
' The distribution of materials within any given zone shall be such that the fill is free from lenses,
pockets, streaks, or layers of material differing substantially in texture or gradation from the
' surrounding material. The combined borrow excavation and fill placement operation shall be
such that the materials, when placed within the fill areas, shall be blended sufficiently to secure
' the best practicable distribution of the material, subject to the approval of the Engineer. Where
the gradations of two materials are not compatible, in the opinion of the Engineer, the
Contractor shall place and compact, as specified, not less than two ft of material of an
intermediate gradation between the incompatible materials.
If, in the opinion of the Engineer, the surface of the prepared foundation or the surface of any
r layer of the fill is too dry or too smooth to bond properly with the layer of material to be placed
thereon, it shall be moistened and/or worked with a harrow, scarifier, or other equipment to
' provide a satisfactory bonding surface before the next layer of fill material is placed. If, in the
opinion of the Engineer, the prepared foundation surface is too wet for proper compaction of
_ the fill material to be placed thereon, it shall be removed and allowed to dry or shall be worked
' with a harrow, scarifier, or other equipment to reduce the moisture content to the required
amount, and then compacted before the next layer of fill material is placed.
1 6.2 Tailings Disposal Area Embankment Fill Material
The Contractor shall furnish, transport, and place Type 1 embankment fill material as set forth
in these Specifications, or as specified by the Engineer.
r Type 1 material will be utilized for the construction of the second Phase II embankment raise.
Type 1 material shall be placed to the lines and grades specified on the Drawings. Type I
material shall consist of inorganic soils or rock materials with a maximum 6-inch rock size and
may include relatively fine-grained rock fills, sand and gravel, sandy soils, silty ar clayey soils,
or any combination thereof meeting the gradation requirements specified herein. These materials
shall be selectively borrowed from on-site sources or existing material stockpiles as directed by
the Engineer. Gradation of this material shall allow a maximum particle size of less than six
inches. The gradation shall be as follows:
' -iz-
