2) Table 2-1 outlines water quality parameters for surface
water and alluvial groundwater. Total metal analyses are
prescribed. However, the groundwater samples should be
sampled for dissolved metals rather than total. Please
make the appropriate correction.
3) On page 6 of the AHR, WFU notes that TDS concentrations
in Qal-5 appear to be on the decline. Does WFU have any
thoughts on why TDS levels are declining in the alluvium?
4) In Table 2-2, which is a statistical summary of water
depth in bedrock holes and Qal-5, some of the wells which
were required to be monitored quarterly had only 3
readings. Please explain.
5) Pages 8 and 9 of the AHR describe drops in bedrock water
levels observed as a result of mining. The PHC section
of the PAP should be updated to include the observed
water level drops and predict future effects.
6) On page 8, mention is made of an observed water level
drop in well 2-7U, but no mention is made of the
magnitude of the drop. Please expand.
7) On the top of page 9, mention is made of a drillhole
being mined through in the vicinity of well 36-2U and of
the subsequent seepage into the mine of 0.25 gpm and
observed water level drops in 36-2U. Has WFU made any
attempt to seal off the drillhole?
8) In Table 2-4 of the AHR, it would be helpful to include
high and low concentrations observed during the water
year ..especially in discharge point 026 which has
historically had problems with elevated TDS levels.
9) Both the 1993 and 1994 AHRs mention that WQCD sent an
effluent sample and prior toxicity reports to the EPA
laboratory in Duluth to investigate the cause of toxicity
in some of the discharges at the Deserado Mine. In both
reports, WFU states that it believes WQCD has not heard
from the EPA regarding this matter. Is there any new
information in this regard since the AHR was written?
Has WFU checked with WQCD or EPA to find out the results
of their investigation?
Please respond to the above concerns. If you have any questions,
please call me at (303) 866-3567 X320.
Sincerely,
~~~--
Barbara L. Pavlik
Environmental Protection Specialist
