CAPABILITY CLASSIFICATION
Niwot,
Capab311ty Unit IVw-1 (Irrigated)
This unit consists of deep, somewhat poorly drained soils
of ti:a Niwot series, These soils have a surface laver of
loam, sandy clay loam, or clay loam that is 10 to 2C'
inches deep over gravelly sand, Slopes are 0 to 1 F.ercent.
Permeability is moderate, Runoff is slow, and the erosion
hazard is slight. Available water capacity is low ar mod-
erate, The effective rooting dept: is 60 inches or more.
A seasonal high water table is at a depth of ;~ to 1L feet,
Included in this unit is Made land that is composed of
waste material from sugar factories. dome areas have
been seeded to Press and are irrigated. Made land is not
suited to dr;.land croppinc and s:;ould remain under a per-
manent cover of grass,
The soils of this capability unit are suited to very
limited cropping. Water-tolerant crops are especially
suitable, Eecause t!:e•- are drou~-hty, it is not practical
to drain tY.ese soils. ?recuent licht irrigations mini-
mize accumulations of salts. Leveling that requires
• deep cuts is not suitable because it exposes the under-
lyinP, droughty gravelly sand. some smoothing is helo;hl
in controlling flow of irrigation water.
These soils are best suited to permanent Presses for ha~~
or pasture. Tall wheat€rass, tall fescue, or yellow-
blossom sweetclover are suitable for pasture, pastures
should be rotated and grazin€ limite~?•so that a minimum
of 3 inches of Erouth is left on t;;e soil. ~+.^~en hi Ph
water is flowing in stream channels, protection of s';ream-
benks is necessary to e:oid erosion. Commercial far+~ilizer
improves amount and value o" t':.e :'orage pro~uced.
n
