McClave series.
The McClave series is made up of deep, somswhat poorly
drained soils, These soils formed on low terraces ar;d
bottom lands in loamy alluvium. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent.
Elevations are 4,900 to 5,500 feet, The native vegetation
is mainly short grasses. Annual precipitation is 12 to 18
inches, Mean annual air temperature is 48° to 52°L'., and
the frost-free season is about 140 to 155 days.
In a representative profile the surface layer, about tl0
inches thick, is dark gracish-brown and grayish-brown light
clay loan that is_mottled in the lower part. The under-
lying naterial is mottled, brown light clay loam that
extends to a depth of 60 inches or more. Soil reaction
is neutral.
McClave soils have moderate permeability. Available •aater
capacity for the entire profile is high. Roots can o:netrste
to a depth of 60 inches or more, and the seasonal hig'.1 water
table is at a depth between 2 end 4 feet.
These soils are used for irrigated crops and pastures„
Representative profile of McClave clay loam, located
950 feet south and 60 feet west of the center of sec.'1,
T. 2 K., R.6q 'd. ;
• Ao - 0 to 7 inches, dark grayish-brown (10`!R 4/c)
light clay loam, very dark brown (10~'R 2j2)
when moist; stron3, medium, grannular structure;
soft, very friable; neutral; clear, smooth
boundary.
A1? - 7 to 19 inches, grayish-brown (101'R 5/2)
light clay loam, ver^ darts gra~;ish brown
(10YR 3/2) when moist; week, fine, sub-
angular blocky structure: hard, firm;
neutral; ¢radusl, wavy boundary.
A13g-1q to 40 inches, grayish-brown (10'rR 5/2)
light clay loam with many fine, distinct,
brown (7,5YR 5/4) mottles; very dark gray-
ish brown (10YR 3/2) when moist; weak,
medium, subangular blocky structure; hard,
firm; neutral; gradual, wavy boundary,
C1g - 40 to 60 inches, brown (10YR 5/3) light cla;t
loam With many, large, distinct, brown
(7.5~'R 5/4} mottles; brown (10°R 4/3) when
moist; massive slightly hard, very friable;
neutral.
i
