1
prior to discharge. Table M98-3 was prepared to estimate the total inflows and
' discharges from the Roadside South Portal but does not include the water consumed
for mining purposes as discussed in the Consumptive Use section of this report. For
' the inflow calculation, an attempt was made to account for water level changes in the
old portions of the mine. Negative values of "water level" flow represent periods when
the water level was decreasing as a result of discharge being greater than the inflow.
' The calculated inflows for September were 230 gpm which is slightly less than the
257.1 gpm measured.
Inflows and conductivity showed little variation at the Roadside North Portal this Year.
Location 1 is from underdrain in the portal decline and has an alluvial source. The
variation in conductivity is not unusual for the site. The higher flow may reflect the
difficulty of measurement at this site. Location 7 is no longer accessible due to the area
' being sealed so the flow is taken at the 1 west mains seal Location 9 represents water
in an old portion of the mine. Dewatering of this sealed area is random and not
measured. Flow at this location is estimated by subtracting the measured inflows from
the average September discharge. Locations 2 through 7 are typically affected by
N handling within the mine. Water that is channeled better may have less evaporation and
show higher flow rates and lower conductivity. Water used for consumptive use during
the Year was not included in the flow measurement. See the consumptive use section of
' this report for further information.
' Consumptive Use
A monthly listing of domestic water usage is shown on data page CA-6. Meter 2
' supplies the preparation plant and the Roadside South office and bathhouse. Meter 3
supplies the Roadside North facilities but the line has not been hooked up since
' operations resumed.
'. Mine water is used underground for dust suppression in the mining process and on
roadways. Water usage underground is not measured but is being estimated. The mine
water is also used for process water in the preparation plant. The water circuit in the
' plant is closed but leaves the plant as added moisture in the coal and refuse. Mine
water usage for the Year is given on data page C-6. Water added to the coal during the
mining and processing can be roughly calculated from coal moisture levels measured at
different stages in the process.
' AkR 98 Page 7 5-1-99
