~~ -
INTERNAL MEMO
to: Dan Mathews
from: Jim Burnell
subj: Roadside 2000 Annual Hydrology Report
6 August 2001
The Division has completed review of the 2000 Annual Hydrology Report from the Roadside
Mine. This review has been organized by comparing results presented to the predictions
contained within the probable hydrologic consequences (PHC) section of the permit.
Surface Water
PHC Prediction: Effects of minewater consumption and discharge on the quantity of flow
in the Colorado River will be negligible.
The AHR data support this prediction.
PHC Prediction: The effects of subsidence on flows in Rapid Creek and Cottonwood Creek
will be negligible.
The AHR data support this prediction.
PHC Prediction: Discharges will increase the salinity of the Colorado River by 0.1 to 0.2%.
The calculations int he AHR bear this out. For the year 2000 report, the date chosen for the
"snapshot" was December 16. At that time, the calculated salinity increase was 0.21%, slightly
higher than the prediction. The data for the full year show that the dissolved salts and volumes
of discharge were within the ranges seen in previous years.
PHC Prediction: There will be increased sedimentation to to the surface disturbance.
This appears to have been the case during the year 2000.
PHC Prediction: There will be increased TDS in alluvial groundwater from mine water
discharge and refuse pile leachate. An insignificant impact is projected.
There are no data in the AHR which speak to this. The groundwater data are from the UTL and
from the Rollins sandstone with no data on alluvial groundwater.
