!.0 INTROD UCT/OrV
Southwestern Portland Ccmcnt Company (SWPC) retained GRIvt-Rocky Mountain, Inc.
(GRM) to prepare a design to recover free-phase petroleum hydrocarbons from the
subsurface in the vicinity of the AST system at the Southwestern Portland Ccmcnt facility
located in Lyons, Colorado. The recovery system incorporates dual phase extraction
technology to recover remaining free-phase product, promote biodegredation of trapped
residual product, and recover volatile soil vapors.
1. / S/TE DESCR/1'T/OrV
The SWPC facility is located in Lyons, Colorado approximately I mile southeast of the
junction between U.S. Ilighway 3C, and Stale Ilighway C>G. 'fhe SWPC AS"f system is
located in the southwestern portion of the facility, northeast of the vehicle maintenance
shop. Saint Vrain Creek is located appruxim:ucly 0.7 mile north of llte SWPC AS1'
systcnt. 'hhc facility slopes gouty to the cast and lies within the Saint Vrain Creek
lloodplain. Alluvial rlcposils underlying the site contain soils ranging from clay, silt, and
sand to gravel, cobbles, and boulders. Groundwater beneath the site flows to the cast-
norlhcast toward Saint Vrain Crcck.
l~hc ASl~ system currently includes one 20,000-gallon dicscl tank and one 10,000-gallon
gasoline lank within a bcrmcd area. A leaking 10,000-gallon dicscl tank system was
removed from the berated area in March 1996. The AST-system berm consists of a a-
foot high concrete wall surrounding the tanks and ahigh-density polyethylene (EIDPE)
membrane underlying the tanks. Located approximately 20 feet to the south of the
bcrmcd area is an AS"f dispenser island. A buried gasoline line and an aboveground
diesel line nm from the location of the ASTs to the dispenser island.
ERM-Rocky Mountain, Inc. 1 Printad on Recycled Paper
P:\ 1000\SWPC\9G 1019. t \Ilesign.Doc
