• MINREC, INC. ANNUAL HYDROLOGIC REPORT PAGE 2
SURFACE WATER QUALITY
Appendix I contains the water quality information collected for North Thompson Creek.
The quality information taken on North Thompson Creek, in May and September, is
designed to monitor quality at the approximate high and low flow.
The variation of the quality of North Thompson Creek as it passed the mines this year was
similar to that which would be expected from the baseline monitoring data and the fact that
the Abandoned Mined Lands peat bog water treatment system is discharging into the creek
between the upstream and downstream water monitoring points.
GROUND WATER QUALITY
The results of monitoring wells D-1 A and D-2A which are located near the toe of the refuse
pile are presented in Appendix ll. Monitoring Well D-1A is directly below the refuse pile
and well D-2A is 200 feet to the west of well D-1 A. Monitoring results for prior years are
summarized by quarter to make it comparable to the current monitoring schedule.
• Graphs have been prepared which show quarterly water level and conductivity
measurements for both wells. The water level measurements for the year were consistent
with prior years data. The conductivity measurements in well D-1A were consistent with
prior years. The conductivity measurements in well D-2A were lower than historic data.
The pH measurements for the wells were similar to prior years monitoring.
MINE FLOWS
All of the water flowing into the No. 1 Mine flows out through the 6-inch PVC pipe.
The No. 3 Mine, (Outfall 007), has two separate sources of discharge. One is from a point
source (spring) within the mine that is piped directly to the surface. This good quality
water was the source of the discharge from the No. 3 Mine, (Outfall 007), from 1986
through 1994. The water level in the mine fluctuated from 1986 through 1994 but no water
discharged directly from the mine. During the second quarter of 1995, wet spring weather
caused the mine to fill and begin discharging iron laden water.
In order to treat this iron laden water, a 4-inch diameter PVC pipe was installed to convey
the discharge from the No. 3 mine to the long pond located at the No. 1 Mine. The
discharges from the mines were combined effective August 11, 1995. The combined
• discharge from the mines is treated by the passive water treatment system and is
discharged through Outfall 001.
