and the area proposed to be added is believed to vary from
30 - 50 feet in depth. However, because of the location of
the Stremme & Gates Ditch, which rises from the river at the
eastern end of the property toward the cliff top nearer the
western end of the property as overall elevation drops,
gravel will generally be mined to a depth of no more than
30 - 35 feet. This will be true in the originally proposed
Phase II, if that is mined, and in the entire additional
area to be added to the west of permitted area. The opera-
tor' s experience so far has been that he tends to hit bedrock
at about the level of the ditch.
The operator proposes to move steadily westward from
the present location of actual excavation. The rate of
progress will vary with the volume of sales from current
stockpiles and with the width and depth of the gravel deposit
in the area being mined. At the time of this application,
the operator estimates that the mining operation will move
westward about 100 feet in 1984 . If sales should be partic-
ularly good, however, more gravel will be needed; he would
estimate maximum westward progress to be about 300 feet.
The rate of progress may be expected to accelerate when
mining operations at the operator' s Avon Pit are completed.
Therefore, the operator' s overall estimate is that the
mining of the area proposed to be added to the permit should
be completed in seven-to-ten years.
If the operator then determines that it is economical
to mine the present stockpile and work area toward the middle
and eastern end of the presently permitted area, he estimates
that mining there could be completed within ten-to-fifteen
years from now.
Once mined, the sand and gravel has been and will be
crushed, processed, and stockpiled by conveyors. The result-
ing aggregates are used for the construction of streets,
highways, parking lots, etc. , both as granular bases and in
asphalt pavements, and for the provision of sand and sand
and gravel mix for use in masonry and concrete construction.
-2-
