The purpose of this investigation
was to determine the approximate extent and depth of sand within the
site for evaluation of the site as a source of aggregate.
Eight exploratory borings were drilled at the locations selected by
Mr. Merilatt of Superior Sand and Gravel• The approximate locations
of the borings are shown on Fig. 1. Borings were drilled February
21, 1979 using a 4-inch diameter continuous flight paver auger. Logs
of the soils encountered in the exploratory borings and penetration
resistance values are shown on Fig. 2. Samples of the sand strata
were taken using a 2.5 inch diameter California drive sampler and a
2.5 inch diameter thin wall Shelby tube.
' The subsurface conditions at the site consisted of clean to silty
sands extending from the existing ground surface to depths ranging
from 12 to 42 feet. Clay strata were encountered within the sand
stratum in three of the borings and it varied in thickness from
' approximately 3 to 13 feet. Bedrock was encountered at depths rang-
ing from 12 to 42 feet in the borings and it consisted of weathered
claystone bedrock and unweathered claystone and interbedded sandstone.
' Occasionally zones of well cemented sandstone were encountered in the
bedrock. Exploratory boring TH-2 encountered practical auger refusal
at a depth of 32 feet.
' Free water levels were measured at the time of drilling. Free water
was encountered in three of the test holes at depths ranging from 10
' to 13 feet below the existing ground surface.
1
' 1701 SOUTH FEDERAL BLVD.
