Ponderosa Pine (Pinus ponderosa var, scopulorum) <br />Description: A large evergreen with a broad, open, coni- <br />cal crown of spreading branches. <br />r <br />Height: 60-100+ feet. <br />Diameter: 2~-4 feet. <br />Habitat: Mountainous areas in pure stands and mixed <br />coniferous forests. <br />Remarks: A valuable timber tree; squirrels and chip- <br />munks and many other kinds of wildlife con- <br />sume the seeds, <br />Engelmann Spruce (Picea engelmanni) <br />Description: A large evergreen with dark or blue-green <br />foliage and a dense, narrow, conical crown <br />of short branches spreading in close rows. <br />Height: 70-100+ feet. <br />Diameter: 1~-2~ feet. <br />Habitat: High forest environment in mixed stands; on <br />humid and moderately deep soils. <br />Remarks: Seeds attract chipmunks and rodents; ideal <br />for nesting, roosting, and winter cover. <br />Blue Spruce (Picea pungens) <br />Description: A large evergreen with blue-green foliage <br />and a conical crown of stout, horizontal <br />branches in rows. <br />Height: 60-100 feet. <br />Diameter: 1~-3 feet. <br />Habitat: Narrow bottom lands along mountain streams; <br />often in pure stands. <br />Remarks: Grows quickly, provides nesting, roosting, <br />and winter cover and food for songbirds, <br />squirrels and other mammals; popular <br />Christmas tree; often used in shelter <br />belts. <br /> <br />Rocky Mountain Juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) <br />Description: An evergreen with a straight trunk, narrow, <br />pointed crown and slender branches with <br />gray-green foliage. <br />Height: 20-50 feet. <br />Diameter: 1~ feet. <br />Habitat: Rocky soils in open woodlands. <br />Remarks: Used for fuel; helps control erosion; wild- <br />life eat the berrylike cones. <br />Narrowleaf Cottonwood (POpulus angustifolia) <br />Description: A member of the deciduous willow family, <br />this tree has a narrow, conical crown of <br />slender upright branches and a foliage of <br />shiny green leaves that turn a dull yellow <br />in autumn. <br />Height: 40 feet. <br />-11- <br />
