We further understand that sandstone and shales
make up the trench and that the area around the disposal site
slopes ~,ently to the west.
Refuse from the mine will be placed and com_acted into
the diposal area by large equipment at the site. A 4 foot
layer of compacted topsoil ~oill be placed over the refuse
and when completed the filled site will slope approximately
62 degrees to the west.
LABORATORY TESTING
Our laboratory testing of the bulk samples provided for
our use included grain size analysis, Atterberg, limits deter-
minations and direct shear tests. All testing was performed in
accordance with ASTM procedures. Soil samples used for grain
size analysis tests were allowed to soak in water for a minimum
of 24 hours prior to sieving in order to enable any easily
weatherable particles to break down prior to testing. After
soaking the soil samples, they were first wet sieved through
a 200 sieve and then the material retained on the 2~0 sieve
was dried and drv sieved to complete the test.
The Atterberg limits tests were perfcrmed by again first
allowing large particles to break doom by soaking and then wet
washing through the number 40 sieve to obtain the sample for
the test as per ASTM procedure.
-2-
