REVEGETATION GUIDELII7ES
1. After earth disturbance operations the following steps are needed:
A. Side slopes should be flatter than ?:1. Slopes of 5:1 or
flatter are much more desirable for greater success in
re-establishment of vegetation and operation of equipment.
B. Excess water from adjacent areas should not be allowed to
flow onto the area unless erosion control uractices are
implemented.
C. Length of slope should be properly controlled to prevent
erosion.
D. Topsoil is needed on sites having exposed soil surfaces
low in organic material and texture classification of
clay loam or heavier. This need increases significantly
if the soils are inherently dry, if the slopes are
greater than 6:1 and if the slope aspect is south or
southwest. Topsoil should be applied after shaping and tilled
to a depth of 6 inches binding topscil to existing soil.
2. Fertilization
A. Fertilizer of not less than 40 lbs, nitrogen and 40 lbs.
phosphorous should be applied unless a soil analysis indicates
suf£icie•nt amounts of these elements. Application of
fertilizers should be ir~mediately prior to or at the time
of seeding.
3. Seedbed Preperation
A. The seedbed should be prepared arior to seedine (see seedins
recommendations). If the area is to be Left bare for longer
than a f'ew months, a temporary cover should be established.
B. All roc}:s, trash and other debris that will interfere with
seeding should be removed. Till the ground tc a depth of
4 to 5 inches. If the seedbed is prepared imr.~ediately
following construction this operation can usually be oriitted,
except on fresh cut areas that have not otherwise been
disturbed. Apply fertilizer, seed and mulch, if needed.
4. Dulching
A. A mulch may be needed to conserve moisture, prevent
crusting, reduce runoff and erosion and help establish
a plant cover.
B. Mulching material should be applied immediately before or
after seeding.
C. Either one of the mulching methods listed below would be
acceptable.
