habitat types: riparian, aspen, mountain shrub, sagebrush, unreclaimed spoils, and
• reclaimed spoils with grass, Exhibit 2.7-20. Each iransect was walked two times per
day for five consective days. Evening transecis, primarily for mammal observations,
began two hours before sunset and were completed by one hour after sunset.
Morning transecis, primarily for bird observations, began at dawn and were
completed within three hours.
Data recorded on iransects included time, cloud cover, wind speed, tem-
perature, identification of species by actual sighting, vocalizations, tracks, or scats
number of individuals seen, and their perpendicular distance (meters) from the
iransect line, their location in the habitat (Tree, shrub, ground, flying over the area,
etc.) and their activity.
Rodent Trapping
The second technique was live-trapping for nocturnal rodents. Two regimes,
trap lines and trap grids, were used for live trapping. Twenty-five Sherman live
traps (25 X 9 X 7.7 cm) were located at 40 m intervals on each flushing iransect.
Each line was trapped for five consecutive nights. When the evening transecis were
• walked for mammal observations, The live traps were opened and baited with rolled
oats. Following the completion of the morning transecis, each trap was checked and
closed.
Each rodent captured was identified to species, weighed to the nearest gram,
and ear togged. Age, sex, capture location, and physical condition (Torpor, pregnant,
lactating, diseased, etc.) were recorded. Measurements of total length, tail length,
hind foot length and ear length were made on some captures.
A second trapping regime consisted of large live-trap grids. A 12 X 12 array
of 144 live traps, 15 m between trap stations, was placed adjacent To the six
iransects during the September sampling session. An additional trap grid was located
on the reclaimed grass with topsoil. Each trap as opened and baited in the evening,
then checked and closed the next morning. Similar information was collected from
the large trop grids as was collected from the trap lines.
In order to determine seasonal occurrence of species, sampling was conducted
during six different months: July, September, and November in 1979: March, May
and July in 1980.
• Dafa Analysis - iransects and Grids
Bird and mammal data from flushing iransects were summarized by habitat
2.7-72
