not known to occur in the Upper Yampa Watershed. These species are not known to occur in
Upper Yampa Watershed, and therefore on site or adjacent to the mine site, due to the lack of
sightings and/or habitat.
There are three species, Colorado Pikeminnow (Ptvchocheilus Lucius), Colorado
Roundtail Chub (Gila robusta) and Colorado River Cutthroat Trout (Oncorhvnchus clarki
~leuriticus), that are either known to occur or likely to occur in Routt County due to sightings
and/or habitat, These species were not sighted in the 1979 to 1980 study on site or adjacent to
the mine site.
Colorado Pikeminnow preferred habitat includes medium to large rivers. Young prefer
small, quiet backwaters while adults use various habitats, including deep turbid strongly flowing
water, eddies, runs, flooded bottoms, or backwaters (especially during high flow). Lowlands
inundated during spring high flow appear to be important habitats. The species is restricted to
large rivers of the Colorado River basin. Adults predominate in the White and Yampa rivers,
young in the Green River. This species spawns in the Green River sub-basin in the lower Yampa
River and in Gray Canyon. This species is known to occur in the Upper Yampa Watershed.
Colorado Roundtail Chub preferred habitat includes warm streams and large tributaries of
the Colorado River basin (Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado south to Arizona, Nevada, and New
Mexico). The species prefers rocky runs, rapids, and pools of creeks and small to large rivers;
also lazge reservoirs in the upper Colorado River system; generally prefers cobble-rubble, sand-
cobble, or sand-gravel substrate. This species is known to occur in the Upper Yampa Watershed.
Colorado River Cutthroat Trout preferred habitat requires cool, clear water and well-
vegetated streambanks for cover and bank stability; instream cover in the form of deep pools and
boulders and logs also is important. The species has adapted to relatively cold water and thrives
at high elevations. The Colorado River Cutthroat Trout is currently limited to a few small
headwater streams of the Green and upper Colorado rivers in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming.
This species is known to occur in the Upper Yampa Watershed.
As the mine is in permanent cessation no impact to the species in Colorado that are
threatened, endangered or species of special concern at the state and/or federal levels or habitat is
expected.
2.7-63b Revised 11/06
